DIY Decorating Ideas for Each Season

As the seasons come and go, so do our decorating needs. If you have a revolving door of seasonal decorations that you’re just sick of, and want to change things up, why not try a little DIY therapy? Here are some great ideas that you can make yourself to spice up your home for each season. You might just have some fun while you’re at it.

Winter

Wintertime is a nice time to decorate, because it brings back memories of your childhood and incorporates familiar, cozy aromas that amp up the cozy factor of any home, no matter the temperature outside.

Cinnamon Candle Pillars

All you’ll need is some hot glue, some cinnamon sticks of varying sizes, some candle pillars, and some twine, and you’re good to go. A white candle creates a neutral color palette, but choose any color you’d like. Simply glue the cinnamon sticks around the edge of the candles and wrap the twine around the center several times. Tie it with a bow, and voilà! You have a handsome, festively-scented candle modification that’s perfect for the winter holidays. These candles make awesome gifts for the hosts of all the holiday parties you have to go to.

Starry Branches

Starry lights in every tree embody the spirit of the winter season. Bring that mystical feeling into your home with some copper wire LED lights. You can pick them up at most hardware stores. Wrap them around branches you find around your yard and put them in a tall vase. They make great accent pieces to flank fireplaces or entryways.
Alternate tip: if you can’t find any copper wire lights, spray the branches with gold sparkly paint.

Spring

Springtime is a magical time of year when the world renews itself. Bright, pastel flowers and new green buds pop up everywhere. Go ahead, bring that springtime optimism inside.

Twine Vases

Set aside any glass jars you go through in the kitchen, along with wine and liquor bottles, because they make great vases. Just wrap twine around the outside, making sure to glue as you go. You can even wrap a faux-springtime flower bloom into the twine here and there to add a pop of color. Now you’ll have a unique way to store your flowers as they begin to bloom. These vases would look perfect on the mantle of your and your friends new homes in Houston, TX.  Little things like this can really make any new home feel bright and cheery.

Make Your Own Wreath

Wreaths aren’t just for the holidays anymore. Create your own customized wreath with craft store finds. Either choose a pre-shaped one, or choose various sticks from your yard or the local park to create the circular shape yourself. Work in any accent pieces that represent the season, and display it on your front stoop for all to see how wonderfully crafty you are.

Summer

Summertime is a great time for DIY crafts. From beautifully blooming flowers to shadow boxing your family vacation, the possibilities are endless in the summertime.

Scrabble Coasters

Make your own coasters using scrabble letters. Just choose a thin but sturdy backing, and glue scrabble pieces together in 4×4 squares. You can spell out words that are relevant to you in the pieces, such as “café,” “tea,” “mugs,” and “java.” You’ll have a wonderfully customized coaster set, and everyone will wonder where you bough it.

Beach-side Terrarium

Bring the beach to your abode with a beach-themed terrarium. Just scoop up some sand the next time you’re at the beach, and collect some of the most unusual shells you can find. They make a great terrarium once you get home. If you’re not near a beach and won’t be going on vacation this summer, you can pick up shells at your local craft source.

Autumn

Autumn is one of the easiest times to decorate. With all the beautiful turning leaves falling to the ground, all it takes is a little imagination to bring the brilliance of autumn to your home next year.

Fall-Themed Candle Holders

Partially fill a glass canister with dried corn or corn seeds and place a candle around them. Once it’s lit, it makes a great homage to autumn. You could do the same with candy corn. Another option is to use twine to tie dried maple leaves to the outside of the canister. Just make sure to keep it away from the flame to prevent fire.

Gourds, Gourds Everywhere

Gourds make great decoration accents all over the house. Throw several smaller ones in a large vase to create a centerpiece for the table, line them haphazardly along the fireplace mantle, and place larger ones around pumpkins along the main entrance to the home.
